Tumours of the urogenital organs
What are tumors of the urogenital system?
Urogenital tumors involve the organs of the urinary and genital systems, particularly the kidneys and bladder, and in men, the prostate, testicles, and rarely the penis.
The kidneys are responsible for filtering the blood and impurities, helping to control blood pressure and regulate the production of red blood cells. The bladder, on the other hand, collects the urine filtered by the kidneys. The prostate produces and emits prostatic fluid, one of the constituents of semen, which contains the necessary elements to nourish and transport spermatozoa. Finally, the testicles produce spermatozoa and some hormones.
What are the causes of tumors of the urogenital system?
The causes of tumors of the urogenital system are not known; neoplasms generally arise due to an alteration of cells and their uncontrolled proliferation.
Kidney cancer originates from alterations in the DNA of some kidney cells and their uncontrolled spread. Among the risk factors: advanced age, male gender, smoking, obesity, and hypertension.
The causes of bladder cancer are not entirely clear, but again, some of the predisposing factors are smoking, advanced age, male gender, chronic bladder inflammations (urinary infections, cystitis). The tumor originates from the cells lining the inside of the bladder.
Testicular cancer, on the other hand, mainly affects young men; other risk factors are cryptorchidism, abnormal testicular development, and family history.
How to prevent tumors of the urogenital system?
Avoiding smoking is sound preventive advice, considering that smoking is a strong risk factor.
