Water therapy of the prostate

Iperplasia prostatica benigna, IPB o BPH

It is a vaporization of the prostate performed in an outpatient setting that involves sedation with discharge after a few hours. The treatment is performed transurethrally by introducing a special instrument into the penis, reaching the prostatic lobes which are vaporized using a needle that delivers thermal energy. The procedure lasts 5-10 minutes, and the patient is discharged after a few hours with a catheter that must be kept for a few days (usually 5-7). The Rezum system uses water vapor and is able to reduce prostate volume by about 40%. As reported by the European Urology Guidelines, to date it is the method that more than any other allows the preservation of erectile and ejaculatory function. Once the catheter is removed, the first results will be seen after 30 days with maximum results at 60-90 days.

Treatment with Rezum is indicated in selected patients based on prostate characteristics and symptoms.

Side effects

Treatment with Rezum may cause side effects after the procedure with irritative urinary symptoms lasting from a few days to a month, including:

  1. difficulty urinating
  2. urinary burning
  3. frequent urination (pollakiuria)
  4. nocturia (nighttime urination)

For this reason, correct indication is essential. This method is not a definitive intervention since the improvement lasts 5 years; it is therefore an outpatient procedure for those who wish to avoid definitive surgery or for particularly young patients to preserve ejaculation.
